The American Homebrewers Association has asked readers of their classic brewing magazine Zymurgy for their top 20 beers that are commercially available in the US, and the AHA has compiled results into a list of the 50 Best Beers in America.
Pliny the Elder from Russian River takes the top-spot for the fourth year in a row, and seven of the top ten beers are from California breweries! Sierra Nevada takes three of the top ten spots with their classic Pale Ale, Celebration Ale, and Torpedo Extra IPA. While Stone Brewing snags two top ten spots with Arrogant Bastard and Ruination IPA. Russian River also takes the number ten spot with Old Rasputin, while Bells and Dogfish Head are the only non-Cali breweries in the top ten!
It is no surprise that the list is dominated by California beers, as homebrewers love their hoppy brews even more than the general craft beer fan, and some of the biggest and best hop-bombs are west coast IPAs and Double IPAs. One thing that is surprising about the list is the small number of Oregon beers in the top 50. typically thought of as one of the best beer regions in the nation, Portland is left off the list entirely, and only Deschutes (in Bend) in the top-50.
