Are you making the pilgrimage south to the annual geek-pageant of International Comic-Con San Diego? Beer geeks will join the comic book collectors (do they still go to ComicCon?), movie fans, cosplayers, and general-interest geeks invading San Diego this weekend with at least two craft beer-focused events.
First up is the sold-out Hop-Con that marks the release of Stone Brewing’s collaboration beer with Wil Wheaton and Drew Curtis. The Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout should be hitting area bars and shops this week, and the official release party is going-down at Stone’s new Liberty Station location. There will be talks/performances by Greg Koch, Wil, Drew, and W00tstock partners Paul & Storm, as well as plenty of w00tstout (including a cask version) and some other Stone treats.
Heroes Brew Beerfest
On Saturday is the Heroes Brew beer festival in Embarcadero Park just block away from the convention center. This outdoor beer event sounds like the perfect panacea to the crush of geeks in Hall H. Over 30 breweries will be featured at the festival with lots of fan-favorite San Diego breweries like, Monkey Paw, Green Flash, Stone, and Ballast Point. There will also be food truck, bands, and tons of costumed geeks to keep you entertained while trying the brews.
Tickets are $40 and include 20 tasting tickets, and there is a $50 VIP ticket that gets you in an hour early, special pours from the breweries, admittance to the VIP lounge, and a shirt! VIP definitely sounds like the way to go. The festival begins at 1pm (noon for VIP ticket holders) on Saturday July 20th, and it benefits the San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider Foundation.
There’s even a costume contest with prizes in categories like “Best Original Caped Crusader” and “Best Super Villain”! It sounds like it should be a great mix of geeky interests all right on the SD waterfront!
