In December a few Los Angeles-area home brewers, one of whom runs OC Beer Blog and is a member of the LA Beer Bloggers, took a Wonka-like trip to Chico to brew beer at Sierra Nevada’s brewery. The fruits of their once-in-a-lifetime beercation will be flowing from taps around town this weekend! Here’s where you can get a taste, and what you can expect from the beer.
Beer Camp (annoying flash website warning) is a program run by Sierra Nevada to foster good-will with their fans and home brewers:
At Beer Camp, we invite our biggest fans to the brewery for a week of in-depth, hands-on learning. Each camp challenges our brewers to make a new and unique beer—the crazier the ingredients the better. Each year, we release some of our favorite Beer Camp creations in the bottle, but mostly, the beers are very limited draught-only rarities. If you see one at a bar near you, search out the lucky camper, buy them a beer and get their stories first hand because while the beers may disappear quickly, the memories will last a lifetime
You can read about Greg’s – from OC Beer Blog – experience at the December Beer Camp (part 2), and it truly sounds like a trip to Willy Wonka’s factory (just without the umpa lumpas and bad attitudes). The beer they brewed – the 94th beer of the Beer Camp program – is a Belgian-inspired imperial “black IPA” called Sleight of Hand!
The majority of Beer Camp brews see a limited keg distribution, but the brewery has released a handful of the best brews as sampler-packs over the years. The crew of Beer Camp #94 will be so-honored this summer when Slight of Hand gets bottled for retail distribution in the 2013 Beer Camp Box Set!
Congrats to Greg and the whole brew-team on the beer; we can’t wait to try it out this weekend! Join us, won’t you?
We just heard that another Beer Camp brew – this one from Beer Camp #95 – will be tapped in Los Angeles next month. Blood Shot is a nearly 10%ABV imperial red ale, and Mohawk Bend will be tapping their keg on Saturday, March 2!
