Beer Quotable: Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione on Beer Snobs and Variety
Yesterday before leaving for GABF Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery and craft beer evangelist, took over the Imbibe Magazine Facebook account to answer fan questions, and we thought his closing quote was quite eloquent.
Imbibe has some highlights of the live chat on their blog, and the final question that the magazine posed to Sam was simply “What are you planning on drinking tonight?” Here’s Sam’s full response:
Tonight I am planning on drinking one 60-Minute IPA and one Lawson’s Liquid from the people’s republic of Vermont. I leave early in the morn for a beer dinner in Boulder where I will drink a bunch of beers from Russian River to Allagash to Port to Avery to Sierra … The Great thing about being a craft beer geek and not a craft beer snob is that It’s ok to be promiscuous—we cheat on our favorite beers, even when we own a brewery, and we might wake up occasionally with a heavy head, but it is never heavy from guilt.
There are some other good questions posed in the full chat on the Imbibe Facebook page, and our other favorite response from Sam was to the question, “Craft beer has gone so far since you first started. Where do you see it going in 10 years?”
The brewers association believes craft breweries can hit 10 percent marketshare by the year 2017 – That’s share for true independent american breweries and does not include beers wholly owned by the biggest breweries like blue moon and shock top – I think that is very possible – the success of small breweries is driven by consumer demand and interactive events like this one or the great American beer fest where I am going tomorrow – not by zillion dollar marketing campaigns – so if you ,as a community of craft beer lovers want to see lots of choices in the future keep supporting indie american breweries now
Sam is one of the great personalities in the craft beer world, and one of our personal heroes. When he talks about craft beer we stop and listen, and we are never disappointed. What’s your favorite Sam C quote?

I’ll drink to all of that. Here, here! :clink:
