The Brewer’s Association just released their yearly list of the 50 craft breweries who sell the most beer, and California breweries make the list 11 times (more than twice as many as the second-place state). Read on for the list.
The full stats and breakdown of craft beer in 2012 won’t be released until next month, so we’ll have to wait for any real analysis of the industry. The list of 50 biggest craft breweries hasn’t changed all that much since last-years list. Breweries have shuffled positions as production levels change (Lagunitas, for instance, was #9 in 2011 and climbs to #6 in 2012 – and that’s before their new Chicago brewery comes on-line).
The 50th entry on the list, Tröegs Brewing Co., sold about 45,000 barrel of beer last year, while Boston Beer Co – the top-spot – sold around two-and-a-half million barrels in 2012! That is quite a spread in production levels among the top 50 brewers!
The biggest take-away for me is that California has by far the most large craft breweries. Blog About Beer has the state-by-state breakdown, and Cali tops the list claiming 11 of the 50 largest breweries:
- 2 Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
- 6 Lagunitas Brewing Co.
- 10 Stone Brewing Co.
- 20 Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
- 21 Anchor Brewing Co.
- 34 Bear Republic Brewing Co.
- 38 Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe
- 39 Karl Strauss Brewing Co.
- 40 BJ’s Chicago Pizza & Brewery, Inc.
- 42 North Coast Brewing Co.
- 46 Ballast Point Brewing Co.
