Just in time for the weekend, Filling Stations is a weekly post that highlights one of Los Angeles’ destinations for craft beer, be it a bottle-shop with a great selection, a restaurant with great food to go with their beer list, or a bar serving excellent beers.

Just over a year ago Sunset Beer Co opened their doors in Echo Park giving beer fans one of the cities best places to grab some bottles of craft beer, grab a pint, and talk beer with the budding community of beer aficionados that call Los Angeles home.
Housed in a strip-mall along Sunset Blvd Sunset Beer Co. offers a wide (and growing) selection of American craft beers and fine imports, an attached tap room with 6-taps and ample seating. Started by a group of locals with strong business ties to the community in 2011 the bottle-shop has quickly become one of the hot-spots of the craft beer scene in Los Angeles, and for good reason!
The shop has eleven coolers filled with craft beer from across the country, but that isn’t enough to hold all of the stock with spills out onto two large display tables. The staff encourages purchasing singles and we love the flexibility of making a couple of mixed 6-packs of favorites and untried beers. Prices at Sunset Beer Co can be a tad higher than average, but the wide selection, flexibility of buying singles, and the personal attention from the staff more than makes up for it.
The addition of the tap-room makes Sunset Beer Co so much more than your average bottle shop, and the tasting events, special taps, and their corkage policy ($2/bottle, but waived on “no-corkage Wednesdays”) for any bottles from the shop make for a great place to not only buy some craft beer but enjoy it as well. The space is nicely appointed with seating and even a small patio, and it will often fill-up in the evenings. They taps start flowing at 4pm on Tuesday – Thursday, and 1pm on Friday – Sunday (they are closed Mondays.)
Even better than the selection of craft beers and the great space to hang-out and enjoy them is the staff. Everybody who works at Sunset Beer Co is a beer fan first and their love of craft beer and desire to share it with the community is clearly visible. They are always happy to recommend a bottle or two and chat about the beer scene with customers. Sunset Beer Co recently hosted a meeting of the LA Beer Bloggers Summit, and you can read about the event and see some more pictures of the shop over on Bierkast.
They do not offer food (other than some chips), but you are welcome to bring in outside food. There are often food trucks near-by on the weekends, and the LA Pizza Company recently opened next door for another dinning option.
If you’re in the neighborhood we highly recommend stopping in for a few bottles and/or a pint, and if you’re not in the neighborhood it’s probably worth the drive to check-out one of the better craft beer shops in Los Angeles! It’s also a great idea to follow them on Twitter or Facebook as they will announce when new shipments of sought-after beers have landed!
