This has been a rumor that we’ve been following for a few months, but it wasn’t until today that we got an official comment on the Central Coast brewery’s plans. Firestone Walker is opening something in the Venice Beach / Marina Del Rey area. Read on for what few other details we have.
We’ve been pestering brewers, brewery employees, and even David Walker himself for months to get comments on what and where the long-rumored Southland expansion of one of California’s superlative breweries was being planned, and we thought we had a scoop when a source told us about a planned brewpub in Santa Monica. Our source was close, but still off the mark by a bit. Firestone’s marketing department just reached out to give us some of the confirmation and details that we’ve been asking for, and the reality sounds pretty awesome. The brewery has acquired space on West Washington Blvd near Lincoln Blvd just north of the marina in MDR. Firestone Walker says:
Venice’s creative vibe was the main draw. This isn’t going to be a satellite brewery outpost. It’s a place for us to connect with the area’s unique energy. Our aim is to contribute to the local craft spirit, and to establish a third leg along the coast, complementing our existing locations in Paso Robles and Buellton.
They plan to offer food – in some form, and of course all the brews that have made Firestone Walker a flagship brewery in California craft beer, but further details are sketchy. It sounds like the plan is to find a way to organically fit this destination into the great Los Angeles craft beer scene, and we could not be more excited. There are few breweries, brewers, and personalities in this industry that we respect more than the Firestone Walker team. It was a big deal when Boston Beer’s Alchemy and Science bought-in to the LA beer scene by acquiring Angel City Brewery, and Firestone Walker’s entry into Los Angeles is another sign of just how far the LA craft beer movement has come, and how exciting it is to love craft in LA right now! We’re actually headed up to Paso Robles in the coming week for other exciting reasons (that we’ll be telling you about soon), and we’ll be sure to milk any other details from the team that we can. Until then, Erika Bolden writing for the LA Weekly Squid Ink has some more details from David Walker – the Lion himself.
