The huge cross-over hit TV show, HBO’s Game of Thrones, returns for its third season on Sunday, and the Ommegang-brewed promotional tie-in beer is hitting LA bottle shops this week. But you don’t have to score a bottle of Iron Throne Blond Ale to have a brew to go with the premier; we’ve got more crafty suggestions for your viewing party!
HBO and New York’s Brewery Ommegang announced their line of Game of Throne tie-in beers a couple of months ago, and the first release has finally made it to the west coast. Ommegang brewmaster Phil Leinhart says of the Iron Throne Blond Ale, “With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate but piercing golden blonde ale with noble hops… it is fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.”
The beer has begun hitting bottle shops (and Whole Foods markets) this week, and it has quickly sold out at many locations. We were able to score a couple of bottles from K&L Wines in Hollywood, but the brew might be tough to find before Sunday’s episode.
We’ve got some other suggestions to beers to pair with Game of Thrones though! We’ve covered the ideas a couple of times in the past, suggesting beers from both a quasi-historical perspective, and based on your favorite character, and here are a few other options:
- Beachwood BBQ’s Full Malted Jacket is newly bottled and should be available in LA bottle shops. The beer is a malty scotch ale, and is thematically appropriate for the show.
- One of Dogfish Head’s Ancient Ales could pair well with the show. Midas Touch or Ta Henket seem suitably Westerosi to me.
- The new barleywine variant from Stone Brewing — Oaked and Smoked Old Guardian — would be a decadent and boozy treat that should match the intensity of the premiere.
What will you be drinking for the premiere of Game of Thrones?
