Sierra Nevada is shipping the 2013 edition of their Beer Camp variety 12-pack, and one of the featured brews is “Sleight of Hand” from Beer Camp #94 – attended by LABB member and OC Beer Blogger Greg Nagel!
We told you about Greg’s involvement in the project back in February, and if you missed the tappings of the “Belgian-style imperial black IPA” around town, you’ll have a chance to try the beer (and two others) in the new variety pack.
The Beer Camp Box press release describes Sleight of Hand – renamed to “Beer Camp #94 Belgian-style Black IPA” as:
“This beguiling black IPA takes a tropical detour with a dose of new world hops, featuring lemony Sorachi Ace and fruity Nelson Sauvin varieties. A Belgian yeast works with the exotic hop profile, emphasizing its complex and fruity flavors.”
This year’s set only includes three varieties, down from four different beers last year. The other brews in the mixed-12 pack are:
#93 IPA—This IPA sacrifices nothing for its drinkability, flexing big time flavor and complexity. The light color disguises the depth of the malt backbone, a pillar that balances the potent whole-cones of the piney-citrus Cascade and tropical fruit-like Citra hops.
#95 Imperial Red Ale—Our aggressive Imperial Red Ale is a massive mix of smooth malts and West Coast hops that have no patience for the lupulin leery. This crimson beer starts with caramel-like malt flavor that can’t suppress the assertive, citrusy hop finale.
I’ve tried #94 and #95, and they were both good beers. I prefered the Sleight of Hand simply because it was both unique and drinkable with a good balance between roasty malts, piquant hops, and the estery fermentation character from the Belgian yeast. I’m quite curious to try #93 as it sounds like such a straight-forward IPA with no real “hook”, so it must be particularly good to get a coveted spot in the Beer Camp box.
Greg is a dedicated home brewer in addition to covering the craft beer scene in LA/OC on his OC Beer Blog and for the Westcoaster, and I’ll bet this is not the last Nagel-brew that we see in bottles…
