Three Southern California breweries have new seasonal or special release beers coming out this week, and they all feature a special ingredient that should make for some memorable brews.
Stone Brewing’s New Collaboration Beer (link)
The newest release in Stone Brewing’s collaboration line is another beer from the mind of homebrewer Ken Schmidt. Ken previously won the Stone Homebrew Competition in 2009 which resulted in the Stone and Maui Brewing Co collaborating on a production release of his Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut porter recipe. Ken won the competition for a second time this year with “Pillow Mint at the Ritz,” a chocolate mint imperial stout, and Stone has teamed up with Vista’s Iron Fist Brewing for the production of Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout.
The beer features organic chocolate mint grown at the Stone Farm and stone-ground cacao nibs. The nearly 10%ABV imperial stout is available in 12oz bottles and on draft if you’re lucky. If we’re lucky the Stone Company Store in Pasadena will offer special growler fills of the beer!
Check out the Stone Blog post for more details on the beer and a video featuring its creators.
*UPDATE* The Stone Company Store in Pasadena will be offering growler fills of the new stout on this Friday 10/12/12! Who’s up for a field-trip?
A New Local Fields Series Brew from Hangar 24 (link)
Throughout the year Hangar 24 releases beers that showcase produce sources from farms local to the Redlands brewery. Beers like the citrus infused double IPA Essence and the wheat wine with Apricots Polycot see a limited release in 22oz bombers and kegs, and the Autumn offering uses over 1,000 pounds of pumpkins. The result is Gourdgeous, an imperial porter with spices and molasses.
The brewery enlisted the help of its fans to process the half-ton of squash that was then roasted on-site before being added to the kettle. The beer was released in the brewery’s tasting room over the weekend and hit the distribution network yesterday. Like the new Stone collab brew it should be available in our local bottle shops by the end of the week.
Golden Road Re-Releases an Old Favorite for GABF (link)
Now that Golden Road Brewing has got the new brewhouse on-line and dialed-in they are ready to unleash the second beer in the Custom IPA series, and rumors are cans of Burning Bush Smoked IPA are on their way to Colorado for the Great American Beer Festival happening this week.
Burning Bush was one of the first beers that Golden Road brewed during its infancy way back in 2011, and the beer has recently made appearances at the Better Weather Fest and the LA Beer Week Closing Festival, and we kept hearing murmurs of its impending release in cans. The smoky 8%ABV/70IBU IPA would be the second canned release in the “Custom IPA” series following summer’s fan favorite Wolf Among Weeds, but we have not been able to get confirmation on when exactly the beer will hit shelves.
Did the brewers get the recipe dialed-in and the beer brewed and packaged in-time for GABF? Or has the release of Burning Bush cans slipped? Details on the can’s release into the world are currently slim, but 4-packs should make it to the Pub and into stores before too long.
*UPDATE* We’ve just spotted a photo on the Golden Road Brewing Facebook page of the team packing a pallet of beer for shipment to GABF and a case of Burning Bush four-packs is clearly visible among all the Point the Way! So it looks like at least some Burning Bush has been canned:
Which of these new releases are you most looking forward to trying?
