After I wrote a short piece for the LA Times Daily Dish that covered the difference between wet hops, dry hops, and fresh hops, I was asked to go on The Tasting Room with Tom Leykis to talk about the hop harvest and what fresh hops mean for craft beer. I want to expand on some of the ideas we touched on in the short segment, and offer a little more background for any listeners of the show that are finding Beer of Tomorrow for the first time.
Hello! Welcome to Beer of Tomorrow!
Hello Tasting Room listeners! Thanks for stopping by the site; here’s a little background.
I’m John Verive: a writer, beer lover, and proud Angeleno, and I started Beer of Tomorrow to help bring the joys of craft beer to more people!
Beer of Tomorrow is dedicated to spreading the word of craft beer and educating the thirsty populace of Los Angeles. We cover everything from news, to events, to beer knowledge and skills, and we try to keep the content light (though we are very serious about our craft brews.)
And there is a lot to talk about! Craft beer in Los Angeles has caught fire, and there is a wave of exciting new breweries and bars joining the stalwart, ground-breaking bars that serve as the foundation of beer culture in Los Angeles.
Beer of Tomorrow keeps you plugged in to what to drink, where to drink it, and – most importantly – who’s behind all those great pints!
The Tasting Room
Past episodes have featured Eagle Rock Brewery’s Jeremy Raub and writer Randy Clemens talking about LA Beer Week, coverage of the Blue Palms 5th Anniversary Party, and lots of other great craft beer centered content. You can see the list of archived episodes here.
I was honored and excited to be asked on the show to talk about hops, and other than my mind blanking on “cascade” when I was trying to describe the impact of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on the beer world I thought it went really well!

More on Hops
My twelve minutes with Tom flew by, and I didn’t touch on half the stuff that I wanted to say. Such is radio I suppose! I’ve put together a follow-up piece that expands on some of the ideas that we touched on, so if you are interested in the sticky details of fresh hops and the hop harvest check it out!
