Beer of Tomorrow Open Thread, April 27th 2012

Is it just us, or has this week been particularly long and painful? Relief is in sight though, and before you know it you’ll be kicking back with a beer, some baseball, and the NBA playoffs! In the spirit of sitting around the house and doing as little as possible, lets talk session beers. What do you reach for when you’re hunkering down for the long-haul?
If you need to kill some time in cubeville, here are some of our favorite posts from the last week:
- Off-Flavor Tasting Class at Eagle Rock Brewing
- Making a Refreshing Shandy
- What Makes Ales and Lagers Different
- Possibly our favorite post-image to-date!
The comments will be running all weekend long, so if you have a question, a suggestion for what you’d like to see on the site, or just want to share what delicious beers you’re enjoying, let’s hear about it!
You can also follow us on Untappd, and of course the Twitter stream will be active all weekend long.
Cheers!

I’ve been hunting for the “perfect” session beer for a long time. Something around 5%ABV or less, with enough character to stay interesting for a few glasses, but that won’t exhaust the palate.
Stone’s Levitation is good on paper, but I can’t have more than two of those w/o wanting something else. I thought the Victory Prima Pils would be a good choice, but it tends to wear-out my tongue before too long.
Eagle Rock Brewing’s Solidarity is high on my list currently, but it is SO much better on nitro tap that a growler of it tends to just make me want the nitro version.
My current strategy is a few different low-ABV options over the course of the session. Or, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale…
I’m a little ashamed to admit that I had more-or-less written off Sierra Nevada Pale Ale because I had become too snobby. “Oh, it’s the craft beer for people who aren’t REALLY serious about good beer.” But I picked up a twelve because I wanted to try the cans and have rediscovered just how amazing it is. Especially when the sun is out, it has again become my standby. I know that at 5.6 ABV it doesn’t really qualify as a “Session” but it certainly drinks like one. (Or maybe I just drink it like one.)
Oh, and your favorite post-image? It totally freaked me out. Enormous-giant-eyed moths give me the heebie jeebies, and I do NOT want them drinking my beer!
I feel like I have learned so much about beer in just the past month that I am going to have a tough time finding beer I want to drink at Dodger Stadium tonight! I am no longer fooled by your Blue Moon!!!

I, former Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, support this beertastic blog.
I could drink quite a few of the Hangar 24 Amarillo Pale – it’s also an easy and tasty 5.5% to drink. When the paleness (bitterness) gets to be too much, I can switch to the H24 Orange Wheat (only 4.6%.) Gotta get out to that brewery soon, seems to be becoming a fast favorite!
Haha! Maybe if Bloo Moo comes out in cans I will “rediscover” just how amazing it is. I mean, who am I to disagree with Willy Wonka?
It is out in cans! That was actually our go-to beer pool-side in Vegas for my birthday last year since none of the casino or pool bars had any decent craft selections.
Oop. I guess I’ll just have to go out there and buy a case. Wait, no, I don’t have to do that at all.
This actually brings me to a question I struggle with often: when presented with zero options, which is worse: fizzy yellow macro beer made from corn, or no beer at all?
One thing I just learned in the off-flavors class was the macros dont even use corn anymore! Ethanol production has made corn too costly of a commodity and they’ve presumably all switched over to rice. Whatever is cheapest…
As for your struggle, I make that call on a case-by-case basis. Out for lunch? I’ll just have an iced tea instead. At the ballgame, park, or fishing/camping? I’d rather have an American Light Lager than nothing at all.
I’m drinking a Lagunitas WTF tonight… planning to go to the pre-release for Widmer Kill Devil Brown (imperial brown brewed with molasses, aged in rum barrels) and meet the Widmer Brothers…. at 9:00 in the morning
How was the Widmer event? I’ve heard good things about the Kill Devil.
