Monday we revealed the first three brews that would be pouring at our First Anniversary party, and they were all beers that have been introduced in just that past couple of months. Today we’re announcing three more taps for the party, and they are classics and some of my very favorite brewed-in-LA beers!
I’m really excited to have these three beers featured at Beer Belly. They are all beers that regular readers have heard me rave about countless times, and I couldn’t imagine not including them on the taplist!
El Segundo Brewing Co – White Dog IPA
I discovered this beer at the 2012 Brew at the Zoo, and it was love-at-first-sip. The white IPA that showcases the huge tropical fruit punch of New Zealand hops and the light and refreshing body from all the wheat. White Dog shot El Segundo Brewing Co to the top of my brewery watch-list last year, and the team is making some great beers. White Dog never disappoints, and it strikes my ideal balance of pungent, bitter, and refreshingly drinkable.
Try this with the Beer Belly Jidori chicken wings with honey cilantro sauce!
Smog City Brewing – Groundwork Coffee Porter
I can’t tell you how many of the posts on Beer of Tomorrow were written in the Hollywood location of Groundwork Coffee, but I can tell you that without those locally roasted coffee beans Beer of Tomorrow would never have gotten off the ground. That alone gives this beer a special place in my heart, and it is enough of a reason to include the porter on the tap list. It also helps that GWCP is perhaps the best coffee beer being brewed today – and the judges from the Great American Beer Festival agree with me.
Rich, smooth, and showcasing an extremely clean coffee-flavor, GWCP doesn’t exhibit any of the all too common over-extracted, vegetal, or oxidized character present in so many coffee brews. I’m ashamed to say that some dumb prejudices and short-sighted assumptions initially led me to write-off Smog City during their early days, but the brilliance of this coffee beer opened my eyes to Porter’s brewing skills and converted me to a full-on Smog City fanboy.
Eagle Rock Brewery – Solidarity
I don’t remember the first time I tried Solidarity, but it must have been great because I’ve been hooked ever since. The subtly smoky and easy-drinking “dark mild” is probably LA’s most underrated gem. It takes some real brewing skill (and thirteen different types of malt) to imbue a sub-4%ABV beer with as much flavor and complexity as you can find in a glass of Solidarity, and when you put this beer on a nitro-tap the creamy head and silky mouthfeel provide another dimension that really takes it over the top.
You would think that since Eagle Rock makes so many superlative beers that I love (Stimulus, Ginger Saison, Equinox, Tart Noir, etc etc) it would have been tough to pick just one to represent the seminal LA brewery, but it wasn’t really. Solidarity may be my favorite of all of LA’s beers.
More to Come…
Stay tuned as we announce more of the tap-list in the days before the big blow-out at Beer Belly, and I hope to see you there!
