Monday is here, and it’s time to start another week. Pick of the Weekend is our weekly post where we recap our favorite brews of the weekend past…
This week’s pick was a close call between a new local beer and the return of a collaboration from three of the best craft brewers in the country.
The Stone / Victory / Dogfish Head collaboration Saison Du BUFF was first brewed in 2010 when the Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor (BUFF) needed a special beer to bring attention to their mission of craft beer evangelism. The herby saison was brewed using the same recipe at all three breweries, but each brewer added their own signature flair to their batch.
Saison Du BUFF is brewed with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, and the beer packs a huge herb flavor and aroma. It is very unique, with thyme and sage strong in the nose and the green and vegetal parsley prominent on the palate while the rosemary seems to linger in the background. The finish is long, and quite bitter and dry. It compels you to keep going back for another sip. Really a unique brew, and we are looking forward tasting all three versions side-by-side in the near future.
The other favorite of the weekend also included produce uncommon in beer. This time it was navel oranges, blood oranges, and grapefruits in Hangar 24’s Local Fields: Essence. The brewers at Hangar 24 have a lot of practice using citrus in their beers, and Essence is the culmination of that experience. The double IPA from the Redlands brewery is packed with citrus flavor, and the citrus juice lightens the body of the beer making for a very drinkable 8.5%ABV double IPA.
