Pick of the Weekend 9/7 – 9/9

Monday is here, and it’s time to start another week. Pick of the Weekend is our weekly post where we recap our favorite brews of the weekend past.
We’ll be writing a little more about the beers that we tried for the Hops + Wheat tasting, but Midnight Sun Brewing’s Hop Dog deserves a mention in Pick of the Weekend. The beer is a big, wheat-heavy, double IPA with tons and tons of fruity-hop flavors. Not your average White IPA, the 8%ABV Hop Dog had a great interplay between the sweet cereal flavor from the wheat and the huge 100 IBU hop bitterness that kept us sipping on it. It tasted not unlike a kids fruity breakfast cereal that was dosed with fresh hops. Delicious! And speaking of wheat beers, Dogfish Head’s Namasteis a Belgian Wit-style beer that adds lemongrass to the coriander and orange peel common in the style. The results are complex herbal and citrus notes that blend wonderfully with the spicy Belgian yeast. Light and refreshing, this would be a fantastic beer to pair with some Thai food, grilled chicken, or just sip on during a warm fall evening.

And finally there was Tart Lychee from New Belgium’s Lips of Faith line. A mix of oak-aged sour ale, cinnamon-spiced ale, and lychee fruit the Tart Lychee is mild but still has a complex flavor and aroma. It is a very approachable sour beer; great for beer drinkers who may not have a lot of experience with sours or may be weary of the style in general. The cinnamon and lychee flavors are very much in the background with a clean lactic acid tartness taking center stage. And at under $10 for a bomber it is a (comparatively) affordable gamble if you’re not fully sold on the tarter-side of craft beers.
We stuck to lots of old favorites over the weekend, did you try anything new that you just have to talk about? Let’s hear about your favorite beer from the last weekend in the comments!
