Pick of the Weekend June 1st – 3rd 2012

Monday is here, and it’s time to start another week. Pick of the Weekend is our weekly post where we recap our favorite brews of the weekend past…
June is upon us! The baseball season is in full-swing, the morning gloom has rolled in, and the summer seasonal beers are finding their way into coolers and fridges! We’ve been trying different wheat beers, trying to find a perfect blend of refreshing and easy-drinking with enough complexity to be interesting over the course of a session, and we’ve got some good options!
The weekend started a little early for us at Blue Palms Brewhouse before the Jack White concert at the Wiltern on Thursday where we finally sampled the house-brewed IPA. It was really quite excellent, far better than I’d expected from a brew-pub beer. The Filling Stations post will need to be amended to recommend the Blue Palms IPA.
The first brew of the weekend proper was Maui Brewing Co’s Mana Wheat, an “American Wheat ale infused with pineapple juice.” I was expecting a subtle pineapple flavor, but instead I got a huge fruity pineapple blast followed by the flavors of a refreshingly dry wheat and finishing with more pineapple. It sounds like it would be overwhelming, but it really works. If you don’t like pineapple then you probably won’t like this beer, but if you do I highly recommend it. This could be the summer of 2012′s go-to thirst quencher!
There were a couple other highlights from the weekend, including Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack, a black rye IPA that had more fruit-notes that i’d expected, and another of Maui Brewing Co’s offerings: the newly canned La Perouse White. A Belgian-style wit beer with coriander and mandarin oranges, the La Perouse White is spicy and quaffable. It should be another summer-staple that will be great to offer to people newer to craft beer who might otherwise reach for a Blue Moon.
Any stand-outs from your weekend? Let’s hear about them in the comments!

I almost got some Wookey Jack today but went with one of my new favorites, the Double Jack. I also picked up some Stone TBA bottles and a limited Karl Strauss Tower 20 double IPA.
Double Jack is great. Are you using the untapped app?
Not yet, I keep forgetting to get it.
I will go install it soon.
