It might be tough to believe, but not every weekend is an endless parade of new and super-star beers for us at Beer of Tomorrow. Sometimes we just kick back and enjoy some of our everyday favorites. This weekend had amazing spring-like weather and an excellent football line-up , and we drank some less-exciting, but still superlative brews.
Session beers were the name of the game during Sunday’s NFL Championship games, and since the weather felt more like an April day than a January one, I felt compelled to break out one of my very favorite beers for spring: Victory Brewing’s Prima Pils.
This North German styled pilsner is perhaps my very favorite lager beer (and a frequent Pick of the Weekend), and its crisp-and-clean finish and huge nobel hop character keep me going back for more sip after sip. It is not a perfect example of a balanced pilsner since the Prima’s malt character is slightly overpowered by the heaps of spicy and herbal hops, but if you’re a hop-head this is the pils for you.
Another hit was the newly-available cans of Golden Road Brewing’s Get Up Offa That Brown. This was a pub-favorite for most of 2012, and it now joins Point the Way and Golden Road Hefe as a year-round canned offering from the Atwater brewery (Facebook gallery link).
The beer is a balanced and hoppy take on the English Brown Ale that has a nutty character and a nice depth of flavor. It’s quite drinkable, and at 5.5%, it should be a hit at your Superbowl party.
Not a weekend packed-full of new and exciting brews, but rather a nice and relaxing couple of days paired with some old favorites.
