Craft Beer in the City of Angels
We talked about the White IPA “style” a few months ago, and thought new examples of the White IPAs have not been as common as we’d expected, we have seen different takes on wheat beers with hop-forward flavors and luscious hop aromas. We sat down with three very different hoppy wheat beers in a side-by-side comparison to see how different brewers are squeezing more hop flavor into their wheat beers.
As the weather warms up we leave the heavier barleywines, double IPAs, and imperial stouts in the fridge and reach for more refreshing beer instead. This summer a nascent style of craft beer is poised to take-off that will fit the bill: the White IPA. Many breweries are producing this new hybrid beer, and they can make a refreshing change-of-pace from a heavier IPA while retaining a satisfying depth-of-flavor and complexity. Bend, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery is invading Los Angeles this week and setting up a Base Camp where beer-fans can try their flagship Mirror Pond pale ale and learn about the other beers that Deschutes offers. The brewery has even brought Woody, their giant keg/mobile taproom, with them!
Sean over at Beer Search Party has the details on all the venues and events that the Base Camp is at this week. The party kicks off tonight at Mohawk Bend in Silverlake, and wraps up on Friday at the House of Blues with plenty of stops in between.
Draft Magazine’s 2012 Beer Bracket has concluded, and the reader votes have named Stone Brewing’s 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA the champion. The thick, dark, and extra-hoppy ale won a hard fought semi-final round against Firestone Walker’s Double Jack double-IPA, and then it fittingly was voted into the winner’s circle over Deschutes Brewery’s Abyss imperial stout.
