The proper glassware for craft beer is a well-worn topic with the general consensus being tulips, snifters, and nonic pints being the three must-have glasses to cover most popular craft beer styles. When it comes to the most popular craft beer style in America, the American IPA, the usual recommendation is a nonic pint, but why shouldn’t this iconic and distinct style have its own signature glass-style? Something that would highlight all the qualities of the IPA that have made it so popular: the hoppy aromas, the lively carbonation, and the thick robust head? Beer cocktails are all the rage these days, and the concept has many beer-fans upset. We are going to stay out of the beer cocktail debate for the time being; we are not opposed to the idea, we just don’t have enough experience with them to form a firm opinion. Beer-and-liquor combos might be the new fad, but mixing beer is nothing new. In the 18th century the practice of mixing expensive aged beer with less-palatable but cheaper young beer gave birth to the porter style, and there is a long list of modern-day examples of different beers being mixed into something new. BREWPUBLIC has put together an exhaustive list of 50 Must Try Hoppy Beers, and if you’re a hop-head this list is like the ultimate wish-list. We suggest printing out a copy to carry in your wallet for when you find yourself with cash to burn in a new bottle shop.

Is the IPA Getting Watered Down?

Dan over at thefullpint.com expresses his ire at the craft beer industry’s attempts to cash in on the popularity of India Pale Ales with a constant parade of new “styles” and off-shoots. We touched on this in our Get to Know a Style: IPA, and Dan is concerned that core features of an IPA; color, hops, and balance, are not being adhered to by all the white IPAs and black IPAs and hop-free IPAs that brewers are developing.
