One of the most popular beers that Golden Road Brewing made last year, the double IPA Wolf Among Weeds, is making it’s triumphant return beginning today, and fans of all things hoppy won’t want to miss this brew!
The first release of “The Wolf” was in August of last year; the beer was the first canned release in the Golden Road Custom IPA series. Wolf was a rich and hoppy IPA with the brewery’s then signature sweet and malty backbone that supported a huge aromatic hop punch. The Wolf was so pungent that — no joke — it induced sneezing fits in a friend of ours every time she was around a can being opened! It was a big success for the brewery who had struggled to get the beer geeks behind their brews up until that point.
A lot has happened in nine months, and now there’s a new Brewmaster running things at the brewery. Jesse Houck has been charged with amping up (and drying-out) GRB’s core line-up, and his take on Wolf Among Weeds is hitting the Golden Road-family properties tonight for the launch event, then trickling out to LA’s bars later this week.
I had a chance to sample the new batch straight out of the brite-tank yesterday, and honestly I was a little apprehensive. While I’m a big fan of two of Jesse’s new brews: It’s Not Always Sunny in LA, and Aunt Sally’s Pale Ale, the new-look Point the Way IPA hasn’t connected with me. I’ve found the re-working of the GRB flagship IPA to be a little too light in body, and I think that it’s a bit over-hopped and out-of-balance. Most people I’ve talked to think it’s an improvement over OG-PTW, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
It turns out my apprehension regarding the beloved Wolf Among Weeds was unfounded. The new recipe packs the same huge hop aroma into dryer, crisper body. The beer smacks you nostrils with hoppy goodness, and it is dangerously drinkable.
I think GRB has a big hit on their hands. You can score the first-tastes of the hop-bomb at Tony’s Darts Away, Mohawk Bend, and The Pub at Golden Road starting tonight at 6pm!
And I’m happy to unofficially announce that there will be a keg tapped at the Beer of Tomorrow Anniversary Party on March 30th!
